The Ware Co Gators have 6 State placers and finish 6th as a team at State Traditionals!



AAAAA State Traditional Tournament
2/13/20 – 2/15/20
Macon Coliseum

The Ware County wrestling team qualified 11 Gators and brought 2 alternates to Macon to compete in the class AAAAA state traditional tournament held at the Macon Coliseum on Thursday – Saturday 2/13 – 2/15/20.  Competing for the Gators were Ethan Frye (sr.) @ 106 lbs., Anthony Phillips (so.) @ 113 lbs., Grayson Smith (jr.) @ 126 lbs., Kah’lil Clowers (fr.) @ 138 lbs., Kobie Turner (sr.) @ 145 lbs., Banner Thomas (jr.) @ 152 lbs., Cannon White (sr.) @ 160 lbs., JJ Rodriguez (so.) @ 1709 lbs., Kooper Thomas (sr.) @ 182 lbs., Jesus Hernandez (sr.) @ 195 lbs. Tyler Nipper (jr.) @ 220 lbs. {entered the tournament as an alternate}, and Kendra Moore (fr.) @ 122 lbs. competing in the girls tournament.  Jeremy Butler (jr.) also travelled as an alternate at 132 lbs. but did not compete.  The Gators put 6 wrestlers on the podium:  Ethan Frye – runner-up, Kooper Thomas runner-up, Anthony Phillips – 3rd, Jesus Hernandez – 4th, Cannon White – 6th, and the Gator’s first female state placer Kendra Moore placing 5th in the state Girls tournament as a freshman.  The girls’ tournament is not divided by classification.  The Gators placed 6th overall as a team out of 43 teams representing class AAAAA.  Complete team scores, brackets, and individual team results can be viewed at www.trackwrestling.com.  The top 10 team results and individual Ware county wrestler results are listed below.

Gators head to State!







The Gator wrestling team competed in the AAAAA Section B traditional wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at Alexander HS.  There were 29 teams represented in the tournament (team list is at the end of the document).  The sectional tournament functions as a state qualifying tournament and there is no team score kept.  Each weight class contained 16 wrestlers who represented the top four finishers in 4 out of the 8 regions in the state.  The AAAAA B sectional contained Regions 2, 4, 5 and 7.  Each 16 man bracket was wrestled to 9th place, and the top 8 in each weight class qualify for the AAAAA State Championship to be held at the Macon Coliseum Thursday – Saturday 2/13 – 2/15/20.  The Gators qualified 10 of the 14 weight classes and had two 9th place finishes overall.  Qualifying for the Gators were Ethan Frye (sr.) at 106 lbs., Anthony Phillips (so.) at 113 lbs., Grayson Smith (jr.) at 126 lbs., Kah’lil Clowers (fr.) at 138 lbs., Kobie Turner (sr.) at 145 lbs., Banner Thomas (jr.) at 152 lbs., Cannon White (sr.) at 160 lbs., JJ Rodriguez (so.) at 170 lbs., Kooper Thomas (sr.) at 182 lbs., and Jesus Hernandez (sr.) at 195 lbs.  Finishing as alternates were Jeremy Butler (jr.) at 132 lbs. and Tyler Nipper (jr.) at 220 lbs.   Ware County had 3 female wrestlers compete in the Section 4 girls’ tournament as well, which was held at the same venue.  The girls’ tournament consisted of all the AAAAA section B teams female wrestlers as well as all of the AAAAAA section B teams female wrestlers.  The girls’ state tournament is not divided by classification.  The girls weight class brackets were built based on the number of athletes who entered the tournament, and there was no preliminary qualifier for the girls prior to sectionals.  To qualify for state the girls had to make it to the finals and then place first or true second.  Ware county entered Decotia Adkinson (fr.) at 102 lbs., Kendra Moore (fr.) at 122 lbs., and Perla Hernandez (so.) at 132 lbs.  Kendra was the only female wrestler to qualify for the state championship for the Gators and she won her true second place match, qualifying her for the state championship.  For complete brackets for each tournament visit www.trackwrestling.com  For the state tournament schedule and brackets for the state tournament visit www.ghsa.net  For additional information and pictures visit www.warecountywrestling.com  Ware county individual results are listed below:
