AAAAA State Traditional Tournament

The Gator wrestling team sent 9 grapplers to Loganville Thursday night to get ready for the GHSA AAAAA State Traditional Championship hosted By Loganville High School.  Each of these 9 won at least one match with 5 wrestlers going 1 – 2 (Zy Grant (106 lbs.), Zurell Taylor (132 lbs.), Devante Durham (145 lbs.), Shawn Lewis (152 lbs.), and Jaquan Barefield (160 lbs.), Dakota York, at 285 lbs., earning a top eight finish with a record of 2 – 2, Jake Gourley at 138 lbs. placing 4^th in the state by making the long haul through the consolation bracket with a record of 4 - 2, Luke Littlefield (113 lbs.), only the fourth state finalist in WCHS history, finishing as runner-up to Logan Sims of Woodland (Dec. 3 – 0) in the finals, and Jacob Allen (195 lbs.) earning the first individual state championship in the history of WCHS.  Allen won the gold in the finals defeating Isiah Ross from Woodland 10 – 7.  Allen started out in front ending the first period 4 – 0. Ross flurried in the second period, and in the beginning of the third tying the match at 5.  Starting in the defensive position with 15 seconds left in the match, Allen attempts a Peterson getting caught for 2 near fall and dropping 7 – 5.  Using his “funky” wrestling technique, Allen is able to hip-heist into a grape-vine position scoring a two point reversal and earning 3 near-fall with the match ending with Ross on his back defending an eminent pin.  You can see the time lapse still photographs of the last 15 seconds of the match at www.warecountywrestling.com  The pictures will be posted Monday.  As a team the Gators finished 8^th out of 55 teams represented at the tournament scoring a total of 78.5 points.  The top 10 teams were 1. Cambridge (132.0), 2. Allatoona (123.5), 3. Pope (122.5), 4. Woodland (110.0), 5. Creekview (91.5), 6. South Paulding (86.0), 7. Rome (79.0), 8. Ware (78.5), 9. Effingham (67.0), 10. Ola (65.0).  The Ware Co. The Gator wrestling team qualified 9 of 13 wrestlers this weekend for state in Atlanta next weekend.  The Gators put up two sectional champions (Luke Littlefield – 113 and Jacob Allen 195), one 3^rd place (Dakota York – HW), two 4^th placers (Zy Grant – 106 and Jake Gourley – 138), three 6^th placers (Zurell Taylor – 132, Devante Durham – 145, and Shawnmichael Lewis), and one 7^th place finish (Jaquan Barefield – 160).  Jacob Allen made the Gator highlight reel by earning all wins by fall including a 23 second pin vs. Flowery Branch in the finals.  To qualify for the state championship next week wrestlers had to place in the top 8.  For state championship brackets and tournament details visit www.ghsa.net  Full brackets for the sectional tournament are located at www.trackwrestling.com  Individual sectional results are listed below:

Area 3 AAAAA Traditional Tournament

The Gator wrestling team won their 3^rd consecutive Area Traditional title placing all 13 of their wrestlers (Ware forfeited weight class 220) in the top 3 who will be advancing to sectionals next weekend.  The teams competing in the tournament were Ware Co. (first place 253 points), Effingham Co. (second place 224 points), Richmond Hill (third place 213 points), Glynn Academy (fourth place 150 points), Jenkins (fifth place 84 points), and Windsor Forest (sixth place 73 points).  The 2014 Area 3 AAAAA champions for the Gators were Sr. Luke Littlefield (113 lbs.), Sr. Devante Durham (145), Jr. Jaquan Barefield (160 lbs.), Sr. Jacob Allen (195 lbs.), and Sr. Gage Bush (182 lbs.).  Finals highlights included Devante Durham, who was down 5 – 4 with 4 seconds left in his match scoring a take down as time expired beating his opponent from Glynn Academy 6 – 5, and Jacob Allen beating 2^nd ranked Dalton Mydell from Effingham Co. by pinfall in 33 seconds.  Placing 2^nd in the Area for the Gators were Jr. Zy Grant (106 lbs.), Fr. Kaleb Adridge (120 lbs.), Fr. Julian Thomas (126 lbs.), Sr. Zurell Taylor (132 lbs.), Sr. Jake Gourley (138 lbs.),  and Sr. Dakota York (HW).  Placing 3^rd in the Area for the gators were Sr. Shawn Lewis (152 lbs.) and Fr. Britton Jones (170 lbs.).  These wrestlers will be competing at the sectional traditional tournament next Friday and Saturday at Cambridge HS where the top 8 placers will advance to the state finals.  Wrestling will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday.  Individual results are listed below:
