GHSA State Traditional Championship 2021

The Lady Gator and Gator wrestlers finished their season in Macon this week wrestling in the GHSA state traditional wrestling championship held at the Macon Coliseum.  The Gators sent 6 girls to the tournament to wrestle in the Girls State Traditional portion of the event.  The Lady Gators competed among 147 schools represented in the tournament.  The Girls tournament was open to all girls in the state of GA and there was no separation by classification.  There are 10 weight classes in the Girls season and schools were allowed to enter as many athletes per weight class as they wanted. There was no official team scoring for the Girls tournament, although, with only 6 entries, the Lady Gator amassed 73.0 team points which would have placed them 7th overall in the tournament (Note:  There was no official team recognition in the Girls tournament.  Scores were based on bonus points, advancement, and placement for all team wrestlers in the tournament).  Caitlyn Mixon (jr.), wrestling in the 162 lb. weight class, is the first female state champion in Ware County history!  Caitlyn went 5 – 0 in the tournament scoring 4 falls and a major decision, including a first period fall in the finals vs. Kayleigh Hilley from Oglethorpe County.  Congratulations to Caitlyn!  The Gators Boys team sent 12 of the 14 weight classes to the tournament.  The Gators had one placer, Ryan Starr (fr.) who went 3 – 2 at 106 lbs. and tied for 5th in the tournament (Due to the lack of a sectional tournament this year they did not wrestle a true 5th and 6th place match. Team points were distributed as a tie for 5th place).  Anthony Phillips (jr.) went 2 – 2 at 120 lbs. finishing top 8 in the state.
