Gators win the Fitzgerald Invitational Dec 20-21, 2013

The Gator wrestling team dominated at the Fitzgerald Invitational as they placed 10 out of 13 wrestlers in the top four and won the team title bringing home the big trophy.  There were 10 teams competing including Cook Co., Fitzgerald, Jones Co., Monticello, Crisp Co., Berrien Co., Valdosta, Turner Co., Tift Co., and Ware Co.  The top three teams were Valdosta in third place scoring 84 points, Turner Co. in second place scoring 94 points, and Ware Co. in first place scoring (and I quote the tournament director) “a lot” of points (It had to be in excess of 200 based on the other scores but I do not have the exact number).  The tournament format was a round robin in which the top 6 in each weight class were seeded for the finals.  All 13 Ware wrestlers were seeded in the top 6 after pool play and Ware had 9 wrestlers in the finals wining 6, and had one wrestler in the consolation finals placing fourth.  Finalists included Zy Grant (106 – first place), Kaleb Aldridge (113 – second place), Luke Littlefield (120 – first place), Jake Gourley (138 – first place), Devante Durham (145 – second place), Shawn Lewis (160 – second place), Jacob Allen (195 – first place), Gage Bush (220 – first place), and Dakota York (285 – first place).  Britton Jones (182) wrestled in the conso. finals and placed fourth.  Varsity highlights include Zy Grant coming back in the semis and the finals to beat two wresters that he lost to on Friday, freshman Kaleb Aldridge making it to the finals in another invitational, Luke Littlefield and Jake Gourley coming home once again with first place medals, Jacob Allen pinning his way through the tournament including a 15 second pin against Monticello in the finals, Gage Bush earning his first gold medal in an invitational this year, and Dakota York dominating the heavy weight class and winning the gold.  The Gators also entered 7 wrestlers in a JV tournament held on Saturday.  Aaron Yarbrough (So.) at 138 went 1 – 2, Bryce Mixon (So.) at 145 went 0 – 2, Dalton Soper (So.) at 145 went 3 – 0 placing first, Cole White (Fr.) at 160 went 2 – 0 placing first, Joe Allen (So.) at 160 went 2 – 2 placing fourth, Nathan Tindall (So.) at 182 went 2 – 1 placing second, and Brandon Rowland (So.) at 285 went 1 – 1 placing second.

The Gators will be traveling to Valdosta on Fri. and Sat. 12/27 and 12/28 to compete in the Wildcat Invitational.  Wrestling will begin at 9:00am.
